A search is ongoing for a man missing near Glenavy, after he failed to come home last night.

Police were notified the man was overdue from a day fishing in the lower Waitaki River, Timaru Senior Sergeant Antony Callon said.

Overnight, a search was conducted by Otago Rescue Helicopter, Aoraki Police Search and Rescue, North Otago LandSAR and South Canterbury Coastguard staff.

Police are continuing to search for the man near the Waitaki River mouth.

“Police would like to thank everyone who has been involved in and those currently assisting with the search. 

“We would also like to offer our support to whanau and friends of the missing fisherman,” Senior Sergeant Callon said.
