There's a rare opportunity to see an international band in Ōamaru this Friday, as Portland, WA. cowpunks Jenny Don't & The Spurs bring their fully amplified, maximum-volume twang attack to the Settler Theatre.

The show promises to be an extremely fiery affair indeed, as you'd expect from a band with deep roots in Portand's punk scene, including direct links to such legendary bands as The Wipers, Dead Moon and Poison Idea.

The band was formed a decade ago by the husband and wife team of guitarist Kelly Halliburton and singer/guitarist/former champion rodeo bareback rider Jenny Don't.

The couple – whose marriage celebrant was Poison Idea frontman Jerry A – started out playing cover versions of songs by old school country stars like Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Ernest Tubbs and Loretta Lynn around the kitchen table, before venturing into the clubs with a flesh-out, soaked-in-reverb sound.

These days, after several albums and singles (and a compilation album, The Singles Roundup) they're a live force to be reckoned with, with the machine-tooled precision of a band who've spent years prompting reluctant audiences to get up and dance in murky bars and breweries across the globe.

Support on the tour comes from Christchurch rock'n'rollers Adam Hattaway and the Haunters, while the Ōamaru bill will be completed by hotly-tipped locals Cuticles, whose debut album Major Works is stacked with unruly yet melodic tunes and has just been released by cult American label Siltbreeze.

Jenny Don't and the Spurs play the Settler Theatre tomorrow (Friday, October 20). It all kicks off at 8pm, there's a cash bar, and tickets are $22 from Under The Radar.
