Moeraki saw an influx of local, cold-water-hardened bodyboarders and swimmers on Monday (October 16) to do some 'wild swimming' with three Welsh celebrities as part of a Welsh language travel series being filmed throughout New Zealand, this October.
Jane Thompson of Moa Bakery, Cakery of Ōamaru fielded the enquiry looking for locals who were "used to swimming in cold water to join in the fun with our presenters and share some local knowledge".
She quickly shared the invitation with her local group of all-season bodyboarders (affectionately known as Whitewash Wahines) and friends including local Welsh-born artist, Martin "Robot Man" Horspool.
On the day, about 25 people from Kakanui, Ōamaru and Dunedin joined fire chef Chris 'Flamebaster' Roberts, comedian Kiri Prichard-McLean and S4C Wales presenter Alun Williams who are spending three weeks travelling around New Zealand, getting to know the country and its people, and enjoying some unforgettable experiences in the process.
Waitaki laid on a sunny spring day and gentle waves, perfect for easing newbies into the water and Jane laid on a feast of epic proportions including her award-winning vegan blue cheese to add to the "unforgettable experiences" for our celebrity guests.
It had been a while since Martin had heard Welsh being spoken locally and he enjoyed his fellow countrymen with evident pleasure as did the wider crowd.
What the show's called and when it airs is still under wraps but it's fair to say Waitaki made a proud contribution to our international reputation that day! Check out the photos below.
