Strong winds are forecast for Otago (excluding Clutha) and Canterbury High Country overnight tonight, MetService warns.

West to northwest winds may approach severe gale levels in exposed places from 7pm tonight (Wednesday, October 11), until 9am tomorrow.

Another period of severe gale-force northwesterlies may affect parts of this area, from late Friday morning. A further watch or warning is likely to be issued tomorrow morning.

The wind is also expected to hit Southern Fiordland, Southland, Stewart Island and Clutha from 2pm today, until midnight.
