It’s whitebaiting season again, and several keen fisher people took full advantage of the balmy spring weather at the Kakanui River mouth on Friday (September 6).

Whitebaiting season opened on 1 September and runs until 30 October. Taking whitebaiting outside these dates is prohibited.

Fishing for the small delicacy is also only allowed between 5am and 8pm, or 6am to 9pm during daylight savings, and the Department of Conservation urges whitebaiters to keep themselves safe at the margins of the sea and rivers.

For further guidelines and regulations around whitebaiting visit the Department of Conservation website.

Remember to be Safe in the water and check up to date Check, Clean and Dry advice for whitebaiters to protect our waterways.

Ensure you check with the Waitaki District Council for water quality information, especially after heavy rain.
