New toilets will be installed at Awamoa Park next month.

The contract for the Exeloo toilet block has been awarded to Specialised Services Group.

The toilet is a four-cubicle prefabricated type, and the Exeloo toilets have been used extensively throughout the Waitaki District and in many other districts across the country.

The cost is being covered by funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Tourism Infrastructure Fund ($172,000) and the Waitaki District Council ($250,000).

Waitaki District Council recreation project and assets officer Mark Burgher said the Awamoa Park toilet block has reached the end of its useful life, no longer meets current hygiene standards and is difficult to keep clean.

“The existing block will be demolished and replaced with a new toilet block,” he said.

“We chose this particular style of toilet block as they are easy to install and maintain, and come prefabricated reducing site construction time.

“They are also low maintenance, and the modern surfaces are easy to keep hygienic and clean.”

Once the new toilets are in place, the existing toilet block will be demolished and the surrounding landscape tidied up. This will ensure facilities are available to the public throughout the process. The council will then consider how best to beautify the area, Mark said.

The Waiareka Valley Lions will be providing picnic tables as an added bonus for the grounds. Over the years the group has produced 33 of these tables, which can be found throughout the district.
