The Livingstone-Duntroon Road has been closed again.
A geotechnical assessment of the site today discovered more cracking at the top of the same cliff face where there was a rock and landslip last week, blocking a 30-40m stretch of road, and an adjacent section of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
The Waitaki District Council released a statement saying with the latest information, and the current wet weather, it has been advised to divert vehicles away from the site, and the decision has been made to close the road, which had been re-opened to a single lane at the weekend.
A bund or embankment of rock was placed at the roadside, in attempt to make it safer, but larger boulders remain above the road.
The council is working with its partners and the landowner for the best approach, assessment and treatment of this complex and developing issue.
"We appreciate the frustration for the community at this road closure, but are prioritising safety first, movement second," the council says.
The road will remain closed over the weekend and be reviewed again on Tuesday (June 18).
Diversions will be signposted, with the cycle trail remaining open at this stage.
More information will be provided when available, the council says.
