Election 2023: All the latest developments on 12 October

With only days left in the campaign, Labour leader Chris Hipkins continues to take aim at the National Party, saying he is the only leader who New Zealanders can trust.

Speaking to media in Auckland, Hipkins said with the polls showing a close election, every vote was going to make a difference.

Hipkins said the tightening in the polls showed that New Zealanders were now realising that the National tax policy was a scam.

He claimed if National formed the next government thousands of jobs would be cut and thousands of New Zealand home would be sold to overseas investors.

He said New Zealanders need to have trust and integrity in their prime minister, and he is someone who New Zealanders can trust.

He believed Act and NZ First would take the country backwards if they strike a deal with National.

Both parties have gone back and forth over the past two weeks over holes in each other's fiscal plans, and both have rejected the other's claims.

National say they have not misled New Zealanders over their plans, and repeatedly called any potential Labour-led government a "coalition of chaos".
