Upper and Coastal Waitaki have now been added to the list of areas in a restricted fire season, as of 8am this morning (January 13).

A restricted fire season means a permit is required to light a fire in open air, and Dunedin, Clutha, Strath Taieri were also included in today’s announcement.

Otago lakes and Central zones, which included the areas in and around Queenstown, Wanaka, Hawea, Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra, Roxburgh, Omakau, Ranfurly and Naseby, were declared in a prohibited fire season at 8am yesterday (January 12) which meant a total fire ban.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Otago district manager Phil Marsh said the change in the fire restrictions was due to the continuing hot and dry weather forecast.

"Although we have been experiencing some wet weather, the days are continuing to get drier, and it is expected to be like this for the coming months,” he said.

"Anyone with a permit will need to comply with specific conditions on their permit so they can light their fire safely. You can apply for a permit at www.checkitsalright.nz.”

Previous fire seasons had shown that large vegetation fires could ignite and spread quickly during periods of dry weather, Phil said.

He wanted to remind locals and people visiting the region, the restrictions applied to everyone.

"We are restricting the fire season to reduce the risk of fires getting out of control, particularly with the influx of holidaymakers in the district.

"Whether you live here, or if you’re holidaying in Otago, please do your bit this summer to keep everyone safe."
