Waitaki District Councillors are rolling out the red carpet, dusting off their top hat and canes, and tuning the piano, as they prepare a Variety Show Fundraiser for the Far North District.

Councillor Tim Blackler said when the council joined the Adopt a Community programme,  the elected members were trying to come up with ways to offer support. All funds raised from this event will go directly to the Far North Mayoral Fund.

“People have been wanting to support those affected in the North Island. While the immediate weather event is over, there is a long road to recovery and our community recognises this,” he said.

Adopt a District is a nationwide initiative that connects councils with regions devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle. It is a way for mayors, councils, and the community alike to reach out and provide support - community to community.

The show will feature a wide range of performances, ranging from classical to contemporary, and will have something for the whole family.

Dunedin-based magician Jonathan Usher will take on the role of MC and accomplished mezzo-soprano Claire Barton, accompanied by Ron Newton, will also perform.

Other acts secured so far include the North Otago Highland Pipe Band, together with local Highland dancers, the Oamaru Garrison Band, and Samoan cultural performances.

Raffles are also being organised by residents and team members from a local rest home – and elected members may even be performing themselves.

Waitaki mayor Gary Kircher said the Waitaki was not immune to severe weather or civil defence emergencies, and council members wanted to do what they could to support the Far North.

“We have huge talent in the district, and this is a great way to showcase that and support the Far North District.”

While the showcase has been led by elected members, they have been supported by Musical Theatre Ōamaru who have a huge amount of experience in putting on a show at this scale. The wider council team has also assisted through promotions, administration, and logistics.

Far North District Mayor Moko Tepania said he loved hearing about all the support from the Waitaki District.

“We certainly feel the aroha all the way up the line here in the Far North. Whakawhetai – thank you so much Waitaki!”

The show will be held at the Ōamaru Opera House on Sunday, April 2. Tickets can be purchased from the Waitaki District Council, Rose’s General Store, Ōamaru Opera House and Delectables Bakery, at $15 per adult, and $5 per child.
