Strong winds are expected for North Otago tomorrow (April 8) as an active low-pressure system moves across the South Island.
A Strong Wind Watch is currently in place for coastal areas of North Otago and Dunedin, as well as the Canterbury Plains and Christchurch (excluding Banks Peninsula), MetService says.
The watch is in effect for seven hours, from 9am to 4pm on Tuesday. Southwest winds may approach severe gale force in exposed places and there is a moderate chance the watch will be upgraded to a warning.
Residents are advised to prepare their property by securing items that could be picked up by strong winds. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles, so caution is urged.
This weather event is part of a larger system affecting southern and central New Zealand, including the Chatham Islands.
