The Sport Waitaki and Snap Fitness Ōamaru Tri Challenge is about increasing workplace well-being and having a bit of fun, says organiser Sara Harding.

The Tri Challenge concept has been running successfully in Dunedin previously, and Sara, who is the Sport Waitaki regional coordinator, wanted to try and replicate it in Ōamaru.

“The challenge aims to promote workplace well-being and encourage everyone to get moving,” she says.

Teams of three will register for a time slot to complete a 1.5km run, a 1.5km row, and a 3km bike ride, at Snap Fitness on November 1, coinciding with Gumboot Friday.

Half the profits will go to the Waitaki community via Sport Waitaki, and the other half through Snap Fitness to the I Am Hope Foundation.

Snap Fitness manager and organiser Andrew Allardice says Snap has had a partnership with the mental health organisation for about five years, and before that, the company worked with the Mental Health Foundation.

“Because they're quite passionate about fitness, and getting people into the gym - because it's one of the best things for everyone's mental health,” he says.

Sara says the challenge is a way to build team spirit in the workplace, make a difference to a worthy cause, and to get active and have fun.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to boost your fitness, connect with coworkers, and enjoy some friendly competition.

“You don't have to be great at everything and you don't have to do everything - you only do one leg, so pick the leg that's most comfortable for you,” Sara says.

Andrew emphasises “it's all about fun”.

“It's not about the fastest, you know. We are talking about a trophy, but it's just more for the fun of it and raising money.

“And if anyone doesn't want to do it, but still wants to donate, they can still,” he says.

Registrations can be made online or by contacting Sport Waitaki or Snap Fitness directly. Cut-off for registrations is 31 October, unless spots are filled before then.

Two teams will race at once and can choose a 30-minute time slot to suit.

There are also QR codes that can be scanned, placed in various businesses along Thames Street, and within the gym.
