The first day of spring brings with it the excitement of another whitebaiting season.

Whitebaiters at the Kakanui River mouth made the most of the balmy weather on Friday (September 1), and were getting some encouraging results.

The season runs until October 30 and Department of Conservation Freshwater Species manager Emily Funnell said it is important whitebaiters keep themselves safe at the margins of the sea and rivers.

“Whitebaiters using waders should wear belts, and they should consider wearing life jackets if around deep or turbulent waters,” she said.

“They should also let people know where they are going and when they should be home again.”

Whitebaiting is allowed between the hours of 5am and 8pm, and, during daylight savings, from 6am to 9pm.

For further guidelines and regulations around whitebaiting visit the Department of Conservation website.
