School’s back, and now Ardgowan pupils can get themselves there safely.
Plans for the walk/cycle path between Ardgowan School and Ōamaru’s Eden Street were given the green light by the Waitaki District Council in December last year, and work on the raised, graded, corner-barriered route began in early this year.
Ardgowan School principal Ryan Fraser said being able to bike and walk to school was a positive for the children’s independence, as well as their health and fitness.
“We have families dropping kids off at the start of the track, and parents and preschoolers riding with their kids to school and then cycling home,” he said.
“We’re also using it to access the reservoir for our school’s pest trapping project.”
Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said it is great to hear positive feedback about the immediate impact the path is having.
“I think that’ll grow as more kids see it’s a fun way to get to school.
“It’s something the community wanted, and we have provided, so it’s great to hear from kids, parents and other people who are already using the path.
“Separating the walkers and cyclists like we have makes it safe for them, and for drivers on the road.
The council will be working with the school to ensure the kids are safe cyclists, and keep an eye out for property owners who have the new path running past their driveways, Gary said.
