Waka Kotahi NZ Transport - South Island, says MetService New Zealand is predicting snow to affect SH73 Arthur's and Porters Pass in Canterbury and SH8 Lindis Pass in Otago from Monday 7 to Tuesday 8 August.


Update - There are 2 Road Snowfall Warnings affecting State highways in The Waitaki District, including a new one issued this morning @ 11.26 am, Monday 7th August for people travelling to Dunedin overnight tonight and on Tuesday 8th August - see details below. 


Area: Dunedin to Waitati Highway (SH1) Period: 18hrs from 2am - 8pm Tue, 8 Aug 

Forecast: Snow showers are possible on the Road overnight and Tuesday morning, and 1 to 2 cm could accumulate above 300 metres.

Area: Lindis Pass (SH8) Period: 5hrs from 1pm - 6pm Mon, 7 Aug 

Forecast: A few snow showers are expected this afternoon and early evening, and 1 to 2 cm could accumulate above 900 metres with lesser amounts to 700 metres.

Snow may impact the state highway network, so take extra care if travelling. Please remember to switch your headlights on, increase your following distance and be prepared for unexpected hazards when driving in these conditions.



A cold southwest flow moves north over New Zealand this week with several cold fronts embedded within this flow spreading bands of rain or showers over the country. 


Snow is expected to lower to 300 to 400 metres over the lower South Island tomorrow. Road Snow Warnings have been issued for several passes in the South Island tomorrow and more are likely to be issued in the following days. Keep up to date with the latest warnings and the severe weather outlook.
