Public opinion sought on Palmerston CCTV project

Public opinion is being sought on the installation of CCTV cameras for Palmerston to aid in community safety.

Closed circuit television cameras will potentially cover the area including the public toilets, the bus drop-off area and the monument at the corner of Bond Street.

Police crime data and successes in reducing crime elsewhere in the Waitaki District indicate the installation of the cameras in the Palmerston CBD would help prevent and resolve crime, and can also increase the perception of safety for local residents, a Waitaki District Council spokesperson said.

However, the community needs to be on board with the idea, and aware of the benefits that the installation of community safety cameras can bring to their community.

The Waihemo Community Board, police and the council would like to hear residents’ views on the cameras.

Feedback can be emailed to [email protected] by December 4, and there will be a public discussion on site at 4pm the same day. If the weather is bad, the meeting will be held at the Waihemo Service Centre Library.

The Waihemo Community Board meeting will follow at 6pm.
