Oamaru’s Storybook Trail is getting a new look for summer, with some fresh holiday reading.

Going on a Kiwi Holiday, by child favourite Suzy Cato and the late Arthur Baysting, will be installed on the trail by next Thursday (December 1), and can be accompanied by a song available on Spotify.

The trail begins at the Steampunk playground and ends near the Oamaru Yacht Club. It provides the benefits of getting children outside, and exploring with family and friends, while promoting literacy at the same time.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said the trail made reading fun and accessible for the district’s young people.

“What better way than a Kiwi summer holiday themed book, from the much-loved Suzy Cato this festive season.

“I am a big advocate for literacy skills for kids, there is nothing that compares to taking time to read together,” he said.

The book was strong on Kiwi imagery, with pōhutukawa, pīwakawaka, and pictures of the whanau crammed into the car with the boat in tow and surfboard strapped to the roof.

In conjunction with Scholastic, the Waitaki District Council had two books to give away.

To be in to win, people should visit the Storybook Trail, send a photograph of them with Going on a Kiwi Holiday, and email it to [email protected]
