MetService is forecasting heavy rain and severe gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand.
There is now a Heavy Snow Watch in force for Mackenzie Basin and a Road Snowfall Warning for the Lindis Pass from 3am tomorrow (Tuesday 17th October).
A strong westerly flow over central New Zealand will ease overnight tonight. A complex trough of low pressure, preceded by a strong northwest flow, is expected to move onto the South Island from the Tasman Sea later today then move northwards onto central New Zealand on Tuesday.
Strong winds and heavy rain associated with these features will affect several areas of the South Island and southern North Island, and Warnings and Watches are in place.
People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and check for updates and additions to these Watches and Warnings.

Period: 10hrs from 3am - 1pm Tue, 17 Oct
Forecast: Rain is expected to turn to snow above 600 metres. Heavy snowfall is possible above 800 metres, where amounts may approach warning criteria.

Forecast: Snow is forecast to lower to 600 metres during Tuesday morning, and 5 to 10 cm of snow may settle on the road about the summit, mainly about the northern parts of the pass.
