If ever you wondered what in the Waitaki qualifies it to be certified a Unesco Global Geopark, all your questions are about to be answered.
In the just released programme for the upcoming Geopark Festival on October 27-29, visitors and locals alike are being offered the opportunity to experience the diversity of treasures this district has to offer.
From cheese tasting, to helicopter flying, to rogaining - the weekend has something to interest all people of all ages and interests.
Waitaki Whitestone Geopark manager Lisa Heinz said the Geopark Festival promises to be a weekend filled with “inspiration and exploration”.
“From guided tours to culinary delights made from local produce, from science-based educational activities to wetland tours, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”
The weekend will officially open on October 26, and is a way to commemorate the announcement of the Unesco endorsement of New Zealand’s first Geopark in May this year.
The Whitestone Waitaki Geopark team has collaborated with more 35 local businesses and community organisations to put together a programme of activities spanning across the Waitaki District, Lisa said.
There are a number of objectives of the festival:
Lisa said if this Geopark Festival is a success, it was a possibility the event might become either annual or biennial.
“We will assess the success through a survey and talking with the participating businesses and organisations.”
The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark Trust wanted to thank all local collaborations for becoming an active part of the Geopark Festival.
“It is humbling to see how many businesses, organisations, landowners, and individuals have joined the first Geopark Festival and made it a diverse and fun offering for Waitakians and visitors,” she said.
