The Weston Fireworks this Friday (November 3) again promises to be a night not to be missed.
This is the 18th time the Weston School Home and School fundraiser has been held, and it is a drawcard for families across the Waitaki, and further afield.
Weston School principal Deidre Senior said the organising committee had put in a lot of volunteer hours to bring the event together, which has significant benefits for the school.
“I’m just really grateful for the parents who volunteer to make this happen.”
The money raised increases opportunities for pupils and improves the resources they are able to benefit from, Deidre said.
“As well as it being our major school fundraiser, it is of course a wonderful community event. At a time where backyard fireworks are becoming less and less obtainable or popular, events like these are a wonderful way for families to safely enjoy a spectacular display.”
Organising committee chairperson Kim Hill said the night, which is held at Weston Domain, is a highlight for a lot of families.
“The Home and School fireworks committee is made up of a group of Weston parents that work so hard behind the scenes. We begin planning June/July. Without the help of them all, and the sponsors that back us, the fireworks night wouldn't be possible,” she said.
Before it gets dark there is a variety of entertainment and activities for all ages including sumo suits, Wipeout and Gladiator, soft archery, a Noddy train, bouncy castles, and face painting.
“We have a big number of food vendors and of course lots of glow in the dark goodies. There is a special performance from the Weston Kapa Haka group and of course lolly scrambles and helicopter flights. There is something for everyone,” Kim said.
“As people move away from the sale of personal fireworks, a scheduled community event is a great way to still be able to safely enjoy them in a controlled environment.”
Deidre said the school is also very grateful to the community who are supporting the night, through generous sponsorships and supplying of services.
“We look forward to seeing the wider Waitaki district support this event again this year,” she said.
The event starts at 6.30pm, with tickets available at the gate or from Weston School office. There is no eftpos available, and under-14s must be accompanied by an adult.
