Firework ban for Upper Waitaki Map of the Upper Waitaki.

There will be no seeing in the New Year with a bang, if you are holidaying in the Upper Waitaki.

A temporary ban on fireworks in the Upper Waitaki came into effect this week (from Tuesday, December 20) as part of on-going efforts to reduce the risk of wildfire over the summer.

"It only takes one spark to start a wildfire," Fire and Emergency district manager Phil Marsh said. "That’s why we are asking people to leave their fireworks at home if they’re visiting the Upper Waitaki this summer."

Wildfire was a year-round hazard in the area and the risk increased over summer as vegetation dried out, temperatures rose and winds were warmer. The influx of holiday visitors also created further risk because most fires were caused by human activity, he said.

"Memories of the devastating fire at Lake Ōhau in 2020 are still fresh in our minds, and the locals understand the risk very well.

"The countryside looks green at the moment, but that can be deceptive. People coming to the area from other parts of the country may not be as familiar with the wildfire danger.”

While some other types of fire were still allowed in the area at present, Phil was asking people not to light up at all if there was an alternative. For example using a gas BBQ rather than setting a campfire.

"Just because you can light a fire doesn’t mean you should," he said..
