Over summer, lots of us travel around the district or get a bit more time to explore our own back yards. We asked local business owner (and co-director of Waitaki App), Cara Tipping Smith, to tell us about some of her favourite spots in Waitaki.

Where are you normally based, in the Waitaki?

Oamaru, specifically Central Oamaru

What’s your connection to that place? Were you always from there or did you move there?

We moved here seven years ago when Alex took on a role with Downer in Oamaru. We packed up our Auckland lives and landed here in an old jeep with our old dog, just in time for New Year 2017.

What’s some of the ‘must-dos’ for people visiting your area?

Obviously explore Oamaru - our independent cafes, restaurants and shops are really, really good - the kind of stuff you don’t find everywhere else.

I love going to the lookout on Cape Wansbeck - you get such an expansive view, it always feels dramatic no matter the weather.

Oh and do the Whitestone Cheese factory tour! I took Alex’s parents and we had a blast. I won’t say too much. You'll know why when you do it. Delightful. 

Tell us one lesser known thing to do / see / experience.

Not everyone knows we have some great surf beaches. A great way to get the full scoop is to pop into Soul Surf & Skate on Thames Street - they’ll even hire you some gear and give you some pointers on the best spots to go.  

What’s your favourite getaway place in the Waitaki and why?

I have a memory of cycling with a mate to Clay Cliffs. We were part of a group doing the A2O and we decided to take our own mini trip. So glad we did. It was a gorgeous day, the best company, spectacular views… plus there were a couple of tourists hilariously navigating the cliffs in their city shoes - massive giggles all round. Unforgettable!
