The Waitaki App has asked staff or elected members of the Waitaki District Council to write about something they are currently working on, or an issue that resonates with them. This month Courtney Linwood, in her first term as an elected member, writes about the privileges, pressures and positives of the job.

Opinion: To be a councillor is a privilege and honour, and it also comes with significant responsibilities. That responsibility brings its fair share of expectations, challenges and pressures.

Since last October's election, it has become increasingly difficult to ignore the constant barrage of negativity that we face, as every action we take seems to invite criticism. But amidst the sea of disapproval, let us not forget the countless things that we are doing right for our community.

We, as councillors, are not superheroes or infallible beings. We are your average, everyday citizens who have stepped up to the plate, driven by our unwavering care and passion for our community.

We strive to make a positive difference, even in the face of adversity. It is disheartening to witness such negativity, especially when it seems to be amplified through the realms of social media.

In the digital age, everyone has a platform to voice their opinions. While this can be a powerful tool for fostering dialogue, it often fails to recognise the impact that these comments can have.

It is important to remember that it is easy to have an opinion, to criticise from behind a screen.

Navigating the complexities of governance is no easy feat. It requires countless hours of research, deliberation, and decision-making.

The weight of responsibility we carry can be overwhelming at times. Yet, despite the challenges, we persevere, striving to make our communities better.

So, as we trudge through the trenches of public service, let us all take a moment to reflect.

Before we hastily attack on social media, let us consider the impact it may have on the individuals behind the roles.

It is easy to forget the human element amidst the digital noise, but empathy and understanding can go a long way in fostering a more compassionate society.

Together, we can create a culture that celebrates the positive contributions and supports those who have taken on the weighty responsibility of public service.

Balancing multiple responsibilities, addressing the needs of our constituents, and envisioning a better future requires dedication and resilience.

The break over July served as a reminder of the emotional toll this role can take. However, it also provided an opportunity for us to regroup, recharge, and approach our work with renewed vigour.

Life in the council world at present has us embarking on the journey of crafting the long-term plan. As we begin these discussions, we are required to put on our visionary hats and contemplate the future.

"Where do we want to be in 10 years time," is the burning question being put in the forefront of everyone’s mind.

Delving into the long-term plan discussions, councillors are embarking on a journey of foresight and innovation.

We are tasked with envisioning the future of our district, considering the needs and aspirations of its residents. This requires nothing short of forward thinking, as we navigate the complexities of urban development, infrastructure, and community well-being.

The decisions made will shape the landscape for generations to come.

This theme was made clear at a recent local government conference I had the opportunity to attend. A quote that really resonated with me was “mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri, ā muri ake nei”, which beautifully translates to “for us, and our children after us”.

It serves as a powerful reminder of the responsibility we have to create a sustainable and thriving future for the generations to come.
