It’s Daffodil Day.
The annual Cancer Society fundraiser and awareness-raiser, is now into its 33rd year and 8000 yellow hi-vis-clad volunteers are hitting the streets across New Zealand today to sell daffodils and collect money for the cause.
Along with the flower selling, more than 1600 individuals, community groups, schools and workplaces have signed up with fundraising activities of their own in conjunction with Daffodil Day.
The Cancer Society is calling on the public to “Give today so no one faces cancer alone”, a statement said.
In Ōamaru, a fundraiser event is being held this afternoon (August 25), at the Waitaki Recreation Centre.
Organiser Carissa Samuelu said she is “thrilled” with the support from local businesses for the event, which runs from 2pm to 5pm.
Temptations and Delectables Bakeries will be selling their baked treats, while a sausage sizzle and fairybread are being provided by Countdown.
Raffles will be available for gift baskets and vouchers donated by a number of local businesses, and there will be activities for the children, including a bouncy castle and craft table.
Carissa said people are invited to wear yellow, and entry to the gym for the children is by a gold coin donation.
