A high-energy duo are coming to the Ōamaru Opera House next month, as part of their nationwide tour.

Genre Fluid has included Ōamaru in its tour of 20 small New Zealand towns throughout March, with the help of Arts On Tour NZ.

The Nelson-based pair of Silk Satin Suede (aka Max Duncan) and Bosho (aka Bo Ade-Simpson) are showcasing their unique act, which they describe as a fusion of contemporary music and theatre.

They perform a combination of high-energy rock funk anthems and improvised acts, morphing style, sound and character into a captivating experience for all ages to groove and be moved.

The show will be split into two halves with the first being delivered predominantly as improvised songs and sonic landscapes using guitar, drum machine, and vocals. The second set will be a selection of songs from their debut album, The Groova Meista, released in April 2023.

Wellington-born vocalist and performance artist Silk Satin Suede and Nelson-born multi-instrumentalist and looping artist Bosho came together in 2020, and they quickly found a synergy within improvised music in Bo’s jam room in Nelson - both artists being heavily inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

Genre Fluid’s theatrical street performances found them early success locally, and they became well recognised for their creative musicality in live looping, improvisation, theatrics, humour, and their ability to adapt to all environments, making them well-loved by all ages.

They have played on festival stages and opened for Kiwi artists such as Julia Deans, Mako Road, The Narcs, and Albi and The Wolves.

With a Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion Design and having completed his First-Class Honours degree in 2017, Max has collaborated with a diverse and talented catalogue of artists over the years, creating award-winning multi-disciplinary projects, balancing the beauty with the darkness in music, performance art, film, and fashion, fusing them together in his emotive avant-garde style.

Bo, who has a Bachelor of Music majoring in Sonic Arts and Music Technology, also completed his study in 2017, and has developed his own unique style of live looping music with rock- and funk-inspired guitar playing at the heart of his sonic expressions. Bo has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, performed many shows across NZ, and produced multiple records.

Check out Genre Fluid on Friday, March 15, at 7.30pm at the Ōamaru Opera House.
