Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

As a Senior Resource Management Planner at Waitaki District Council, you will play a key leadership role in managing land use and subdivision applications, providing expert guidance on the Resource Management Act, and driving continuous improvement in planning practices. You will support Council’s strategic goals by preparing reports, presenting evidence at hearings, and contributing to the District Plan review and policy development.


This role offers the opportunity to lead complex planning projects, mentor junior planners, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure high-quality service delivery. Your efforts will directly support the sustainable growth and development of the Waitaki District, protecting natural assets and enhancing community outcomes.



He aha taau e kawe mai | What you'll bring

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Qualifications: A tertiary qualification in planning, resource management, or surveying and eligibility for membership with the New Zealand Planning Institute. A full NZ Driver’s Licence is required.
  • Resource Management Expertise: At least 5 years of post-qualification experience in planning or policy development, with a strong understanding of the Resource Management Act and experience in subdivision and land use applications.
  • Technical and Analytical Skills: Experience presenting evidence at Environment and High Courts, preparing Council reports, and establishing best practices for Council consenting processes, including transitioning to e-services.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Proven ability to support and mentor junior planners, fostering a positive and high-performing team culture.
  • Strategic Contribution: Experience contributing to District Plan reviews, Long-Term Plans, and Annual Plans, providing expert insights that align with local and national planning policies.
  • Political Acumen: A sound understanding of the political environment within local government and the ability to navigate decision-making processes effectively.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

The salary for this position will commence between $85,644.64 and $100,758.41 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
