Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role


This role is perfect for someone who thrives on variety and enjoys being active and out in the community. Working part-time across three days a week, you’ll also be on-call one week in every three – an ideal setup for those who love flexible working arrangements. As an Animal Management Officer, you’ll play a vital part in ensuring animal and public safety, responding to incidents, supporting responsible pet ownership, and reuniting lost animals with their owners.


You will:

  • Respond to animal-related calls across the area, from lost pets to welfare checks.
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership and local bylaws.
  • Support investigations and handle animal containment when needed.
  • Investigate offences under the Dog Control Act 1996, enforce regulations, capture and impound stray or dangerous dogs.
  • Ensure that pound facilities are clean, well-managed, and provide humane care for impounded animals.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Qualifications & Licensing: NCEA Level 3 (or commitment to Level 4 in Government Regulatory Practice) and a full NZ Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of Legislation & Policy: Familiarity with local bylaws and the Dog Control Act 1996, with experience interpreting relevant policies.
  • Conflict Resolution & People Skills: Strong de-escalation and interpersonal abilities for engaging effectively with emotional or distressed customers.

Utu ā-tau | Salary


The full-time salary for this position will commence between $56,820 and $66,847 (pro rata for part time employees), dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role. The position requires rostered on-call work over weekends and an on-call allowance is paid.
