Waitaki District and Oamaru

From stunning landscapes and geological wonders, to the home of the rare little blue penguin and the steampunk capital of New Zealand; the Waitaki region has much to offer.

Waitaki is also home to the first Aspiring Geopark in New Zealand which combines and promotes a network of sites of geological, historical and cultural significance. Straddling the 45th parallel South, on the east coast of the South Island, the geopark is bounded by mountains and sea, and the Waitaki River.

Oamaru is the largest town in the Waitaki District.
