How 1737 Works

1737 is a free, confidential helpline in New Zealand, powered by Whakarongorau Aotearoa / New Zealand Telehealth Services and funded by Health New Zealand.

Available 24/7, it offers support, advice, and information from trained counsellors.

Explore our website for self-help tools and information, or you can text or call 1737 anytime to connect with a trained counsellor or peer support worker.

Offers resources on:

  • Feeling Sad
  • Feeling Anxious
  • Feeling Stressed
  • Feeling Lonely
  • Relationships & Safety
  • Gambling
  • Alcohol & Drugs
  • Counselling & Support

*Note from Waitaki App - we tried the number at 5:06pm on Wednesday, 21/5/25 and waited six and a half minutes before hanging up. There was an offer for a call back (we weren't looking for help, just testing the system - so we didn't take that up). While on hold, we were given an option to take a breathing exercise and directed to some great online resources. On balance, the site has some great resources and we understand that counsellors were likely busy with cases when we called.

✅ Tested: Wed 21 May 2025, 5:06 PM – 6.5 min hold, offered callback.

⭐ Tip: Their online resources are a strong place to start if it’s not urgent.

Note: We weren’t seeking help, just checking functionality. The hold included mindfulness prompts and links to self-help tools. It’s clear they prioritise active cases, so delays are understandable.
