Martin “The Robot Man” Horspool hails originally from Wales, attending art colleges in Wrexham and Liverpool, where his passion for 1950’s and 60’s industrial design originated.

Having wended his way to Ōamaru's historic precinct, his collection of discarded paraphernalia and impassioned quest for elements to inspire becomes the catalyst for his creation process.

The self confessed “urban picker” collects from kerb sides, car boots, markets, scrap yards, antique shops, auction houses, magpie-ling an extraordinary collection of components to uniquely repurpose.

Most of his quirky sculptures contain original pieces from the 50s and 60s - delighting in their detail and surprising as recognition of individual components dawn.

Since 2007, he has exhibited in Korea, China, New Zealand and USA, with sales to collectors in London, Beijing, Paris and New York.

Now, he could not be more at home, nestled in the creative centre of Victorian Ōamaru.
