Waitaki District Libraries

Oamaru Library free public talk: Join Clement Lagrue of the Department of Conservation to discover the rich biodiversity hanging on local limestone cliffs and see what the local DOC crew is doing to try and turn the tide on the current trend towards its extinction.Limestone cliffs and outcrops in the Waitaki valley are well known for their landscape, cultural, paleontological, and recreational values. Less recognised is their incredible ecological and biodiversity richness. Many plant species are only found growing on limestone soil and with these come a plethora of invertebrate and lizard species. Unfortunately, these ecosystems are under increasing pressures from human activities, climate change and pest invasion. Without active management and restoration, these critically endangered ecosystems and the unique biodiversity they shelter are heading towards extinction.
