Danny McNamara was a prolific astronomer and astrophotographer who left behind an extensive portfolio of lunar and solar eclipses captured from his backyard in Ōamaru.
In March 1993, the periodic comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered.
McNamara photographed the impact sites of the comet, the second to do so in Aotearoa New Zealand.
